Numerous studies have suggested that anthocyanins are protective against many chronic degenerative diseases. However, the health-promoting properties of anthocyanins are based primarily on in vitro evidence, with information regarding bioavailability, metabolism, and pharmacokinetics in humans remaining largely unknown. The limited available evidence seems to indicate that anthocyanins are poorly absorbed and not metabolised to the same extent as other flavonoids.
