The concept that the exposure of cells or whole organisms to toxic agents, at doses far below those for which the threshold of toxicity can be measured, can provide benefits to the organism has been termed hormesis. The phenomenon was described by Schultz who observed that small doses of poisons seemed to stimulate the growth of yeast.
