A variety of anthropometric indices have been used as a proxy for total fat or abdominal fat to assess risk for diseases, particularly CVD and diabetes. The most widely recognised is the BMI. Although this measure is correlated with total body fat, it does not distinguish fat from muscle or between different body fat distributions.
