There is a widespread interest nowadays in the health benefits of food components or nutrition-based health and
probiotics in particular are potentially an important part of a nutrition-based health strategy. Probiotics are usually
defined as dietary supplements, containing viable nonpathogenic micro-organisms, which are considered to confer
health benefits to the host through their interactions with the gastrointestinal microflora and directly with the
immune system.
